3 Going On 13

These are verbatim (well, best as I can remember) conversations that I have had with Grasshopper in the past week.

Driving home from preschool on Friday

Me: "How was school today Buddy? Did you have lots of fun? What did you do today?"

Grasshopper: "I don't wanna tell you."

Crosses arms over his chest.

Me: "Okaaaay. You don't have to tell me if you don't want to."

We drive in silence for a couple of miles.

Me: "Did you have Spanish today?"

Grasshopper: "No."

Me: "Huh. I read on your sheet that you had Spanish today."

Silence.

Me: "Well, what did you have for snack?"

Grasshopper: "I don't wemember."

Me: "Did you play on the playground?"

Grasshopper: "I don't wemember."

Me: "Who did you sit next to at lunch?"

Grasshopper: Silence.

Me: "Who did you sit next to at lunch Sweetheart?"

Grasshopper: "You JUST asked me that, Mommy. I don't wemember!"

Sticks out his bottom lip and glares at me in the rear view mirror.

Me: "Why are you being rude?"

Grasshopper: "Because."

Me: "Because why?"

Grasshopper: "Because I don't hafta tell you!"

***********************************************

Driving to preschool on Monday morning

Me: "Are you excited to go to school today Bud?"

Grasshopper: "Yes. I want the teacher to walk me in. You stay in the car."

***********************************************

What's next? Dropping him off around the corner so that his friends won't see me? Being told that I can't volunteer for the PRESCHOOL Halloween party because I'm so embarrassing? Buying his jeans too big so that his Sesame Street undies can hang out of the top?

Embarrassment has kept pace with puberty apparently - they both come earlier and earlier.

I'm getting the exact same thing - Izzy just keeps telling me she can do it herself - she just wants a hug and then she's off into the building on her own. And when I pick her up I don't wanna tell it." Nice. I had one day of excited talking about school, and that's it. maybe with the next one, huh?

I asked J what they had for snack at school and she said, "I can't tell you. It's a secret." (I was curious what the top-secret snack was so I asked the snack mom and she said it was hummus, pita and apples, which is pretty standard snack fare so I'm not sure what the big mystery was.)
